ONE SWEET SEVENTH BIRTHDAY!

This cake was made for my little girl's birthday.  Her theme was CANDY! So, the bottom tier was vanilla with sprinkles mixed in the batter, filled with almond icing.  The top was chocolate, filled with chocolate icing.  The whole cake was iced in buttercream and then airbrushed.  Chewy Spree candy and dots were used as a border.

THIRTY-ONE PURSE

This was made to go to a Thirty-One Purse Party.  It was modeled after an actual purse that the company carries.  The body was iced with chocolate buttercream, then accented with fondant diamonds and flowers.

HOLIDAYS & HAPPENINGS

A VERY MINNIE 1st BIRTHDAY!

SOME PRETTY SWEET VEGETABLES!

Made for my mother-in-law, Linda.  Gardening is her hobby, so I made her a couple of nice rows!  The tomato plants are piped on, while the cabbages, broccoli and cauliflowers are made of fondant.

LOUISIANA STATE POLICE

This one was made for my husban's uncle who is a Louisiana State Trooper.  Very simple cake to make.

SPLASHING DOLPHINS

LIFE'S A BEACH

This cake was made for a tourist visiting our little island, who was celebrating a birthday.  She wanted a cake that reflected just that.  I made this sheet cake and decorated it using crushed vanilla wafers for sand, gumpaste flip flops, shells and flowers.

A LITTLE REDFISHING CAKE!

FAMILY FUN DAY AT CATHOLIC CHURCH

This was made for a family fun day at our local Catholic church.  The cake was done to represent the body and blood of the Eucharist.  The communion wafers were made from gumpaste while the grapes were piped from buttercream.  Cornelli lace was piped all over.

GIRLY GATORS!

IT'S ELMO'S WORLD!

I made this cake for a friend of mine's grandson this weekend.  The bottom tier was almond cake with strawberry filling and almond buttercream.  The top tier was chocolate with chocolate filled, iced in almond buttercream.  Elmo, the #2, and stars were crafted from gumpaste.  The letters, dots, and sign were made from fondant.

SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON...

I made these two cakes for personal friends of ours' little boys' birthday party.  The flounder was made of red velvet cake, with a cream cheese frosting.  The speckled trout was almond wedding cake with almond buttercream.  Happy Birthday James & Jacob!

AARRGGHH!

This cake was made for a little boy's pirate party.  The island was built up to hide his birthday present inside the cake!  When the tree was pulled out, out came a bottle holding buried treasure!!

DUCK HUNTING

This cake was done for my neighbors who wanted a duck hunting theme.  I made the top as a replica of their chocolate lab.  In photos, the colors did come out off and looks shiny...

Trick or Treat...was mostly a trick

So by now I'm kind-of expected to make a cake for something, so the first cake was a small 2 tier cake for my daughter's headstart class. Check out the Pastillage Spider and graveyard scene. It was a chocolate cake with chocolate peanut butter filling.

The second cake I made that weekend was the three tiered one. I made it to bring to a couple's house for a neighborhood trick-or-treat. The kids got their candy and everyone got a bowl of Jambalaya and some cake. The thing is that after we delivered the cake and left to bring our daughter trick-or-treat, nobody wanted to cut it! They all said it was too pretty, so I had to cut it when I came back around. It was a vanilla cake with Strawberry, Pineapple and chocolate fillings.  Meltdown factor was pretty high, and supergenius factor was nearly depleted.

Bonus cake - just leftover batter and practice with piping since I had virtually no experience there.

The cake that started it all

The very first cake. Made October 1, 2009
I made it for my mother-in-law when she went away to work in Arizona. Note the crappy fondant. That was the first experience I had making fondant and needless to say I found a better way to make it.

Which came first? The Genius or the Madness?

It's now a running joke here; I am a certified supergenius. I'm not exactly sure which number supergenius I am though. There's talk that I'm the 3rd, some say the 4th. I don't know. How the madness got started you ask?

Well it all involved me wanting to make a cake for my mother-in-law's going away party. I never had that much interest in making cakes before, only interest in watching the popular cake tv shows. So I decided to try my hand at it.

It's only been 3 months since the first cake I made, and with no prior experience of any artistic or cake-baking sort, I don't think that the cakes I've made are half-bad. It all starts with an idea I have swirling around my brain. Usually late at night I get out a notebook and draw up all these cake designs. And that's where the Supergenius kicks in, or just plain SG as I am sometimes referred to. It's quite a learning experience. From the first, good concept/poor skill "Arizona" cake, to the latest one, I've learned a lot. Albeit usually between bouts of meltdowns and muttered cursewords, and the occasional flying fondant. So here it goes. Here's the cakes...
